My lawnmower Valentine gift to myself

I’m getting myself a lawnmower for Valentine’s Day. Is there not a sadder statement?

A lawnmower’s hardly romantic after all but what makes it even worse is that I’m buying it for myself.  Unless Mrs Jones springs a surprise later that’ll be the only present I get.

Saddest thing is I’m actually quite excited about my new lawnmower and can’t think of anything I really want more.  According to the Amazon app I’m the delivery man’s next stop and I can’t wait to get it out of the box, assemble it and then, yes, mow my lawn.

The truth is there’s not a lot of grass to mow.  It’s more a tidying exercise, getting rid of all the Storm Ciara debris before Storm Dennis wreaks further havoc.

I’ve spent quite a few hours now comparing various models of lawnmower and I’m plumping for the Einhell G-C PM Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower.

Amazon Reviews

I was worried I’d never heard of Einhell but read the reviews and watched the little video about it on Amazon quite a few times now and I’m well impressed with the range of features you get for a pretty reasonable £205.  They include:

  • 135cc 4-stroke engine
  • Steel deck
  • Seven cutting heights from 30-70mm
  • 46cm cutting width
  • 55L collection box
  • 1.3L fuel tank capacity
  • Ergonomic folding handle

You may be finding all this a little sad and boring but I spent a good deal of time discussing this with a similarly aged mate of mine over a few pints.  The chat covered the pros and cons of the various makes and concluded with a particularly troubling story about Mountfield lawnmowers.

Me and Mrs Jones – great name for a song – will do cards and she’ll cook me a meal later but neither of us really wants to put ourselves through the forced romance of some specially themed and very expensive Valentine’s Night restaurant meal.

It’s only now that I’m touching on 60 that I can imagine feeling any of this but truth is I’m quite happy spending a loving afternoon with my new lawnmower and having a quiet night in.
